Who we are, what we do
Thirteen Thieves is an all-natural, organic beard care line formulated to moisturize, condition, soften and protect facial hair and the important skin underneath from the environment. This product is handmade in small batches in Boise Idaho. We pride ourselves on a quality product that's good for you, and the environment. These products were developed and tested on myself (which I use daily) and also my customers at the Barbershop.
Thirteen Thieves formed out of my desire to grow a beard. I've always wanted to grow one out but wasn't able to last more than a month due to the itchiness and brillo pad feel. More embarrassingly I always had a consistent stream of white flakes on my shirt anytime I scratched my face. A year passed, and I attempted to grow another beard, this time, however, I did more research and discovered the use of beard oil as an alternative to the ills mentioned above. I began experimenting with different oil combinations and scents and discovered, having a beard to be a more enjoyable experience this time around. I spent months doing additional research and testing, finding the right balance of oils that not only worked for me but my friends as well.
I have been a licensed barber for over four years and never put much thought into beard care other than my clients shaves, shaping or trimming needs. Even when I was in school learning the trade, beard care was never discussed either. Not fully understanding the issues and concerns around individual’s beards, I felt foolish for never discussing, advising or recommending my clients take proper care of their facial hair, it was a grotesque disservice to them. Currently, I am proselytizing the benefits of proper beard and facial care now that I have the knowledge and the products to assist everyone with proper maintenance and addressing their needs and concerns.
Thirteen Thieves was designed to avoid having parabens, phthalates, sulfates, or synthetic dyes used in any of the processing of our products. There are so many things that have linked negative effects, like skin sensitivity, neurotoxicity, and cancer. They say our skin absorbs up to 60% of dermal topically applied products. A study published in the American Journal of Public Health looked into the skin’s absorption rates of chemicals found in drinking water. It showed that the skin absorbed an average of 64% of total contaminant dosage (1). Other studies found the face to be several times more permeable than broad body surfaces and an absorption rate of 100% for underarms and genitalia (2). And another peer-reviewed study showed 100% absorption rate for fragrance ingredients (3). It makes sense to be selective in what products you choose to spend your money toward.
Our products are scented using therapeutic grade or pure essential oils that offer naturally distilled or expressed fragrances from plants. Because these pure essential oils have their beneficial properties, some can be considered as being or having a holistic application.
QUALITY, BUT WAIT
There are other people out there, who don’t believe in the previous information. Therefore, there are some of our oils that are notated as such that do contain fragrance oils that unlike essential oils are chemically created. We have a few of these to offer customers who don’t care either way what they use. We aren’t completely anti-chemical due to the world we reside. However, we do try to limit our exposure as much as possible. So purchase with your conscience if you so choose.
We craft all of our products in small batches to ensure quality and consistency. We also take great care and joy in creating these products because we believe in them and use on a daily basis. We are confident that you will enjoy and benefit from them, too.
