The Thirteen Thieves Story

Thirteen Thieves doesn't have an incredible origin story; we had a solution that worked for our friends and us.

Who we are, what we do

Who we are

Thirteen Thieves doesn't have an incredible origin story; we had a solution that worked for our friends and us. We wish things were that simple. In creating the products we have, we put a lot of time and energy into them. We spent countless hours on research as to what made a superior beard products. We read books, articles, essentially anything we could find from historical usage data to the newer holistic medicinal perspectives. Based on all the available information, we decided to incorporate as much of that information we felt provided the most optimal results into our products, which is reflected in our current blend.

Learning Essential Oils was another aspect we were completely unprepared for. Following the same research methods, we discovered the best essential oils and combinations that we felt reflected our passion for being as encompassing as possible. During this time of the development process, we learned as much as we could in the blending process. Meaning what scents blend with each other, what makes a balanced scent, and what provides positive energy to you and your body. We read countless pages from the world's top perfumers on the do's and don't's of design, we read so much and learned hands-on applications, we thought about enrolling in The Givaudan Perfumery School.

We are Thirteen Thieves, and we are not a huge corporation who doesn't have a heart. We are a small home-based business that works hard to be as transparent as possible, to be mindful of ourselves and others, and not to cause any harm. We make an honest living with the least impact on the world and our environment, by sharing our love for Men's Grooming Products with you. We would love to have you as our customer, but it isn't necessary to form a relationship. We love you already, just as you are.

What we do

We designed all of our products to avoid having harmful fillers like parabens, phthalates, sulfates, or synthetic dyes. There are so many things that have been linked to adverse side effects, like skin sensitivity, neurotoxicity, and cancer. Some of those fears may not matter in the here and now, but in the future, after long-term exposure, they may be an issue then. Until then we do not want to take the chance, we have enough things on our plate to worry about, and what's in my product may not be your first thought when you make up in the morning. If you use our products, know we are shielding you from those harmful chemical additives.  You may not thank us, but your sub-conscience will.

The fancy smart people of the world say that our skin absorbs up to 60% of those products we place on our skin. A study published in the American Journal of Public Health looked into the skin’s absorption rates of chemicals found in drinking water. It showed that the skin absorbed an average of 64% of total contaminant dosage (1). Other studies found the face to be several times more absorbing than the body as a whole. Another interesting finding was that the absorption rate of the underarms and genitalia is at 100% (2). We ask that you are selective or at least discriminating on what products you choose to spend your money on.

We source and use the best oils we can locate that are held in the highest regard for sourcing, environmental impact, and sustainability. We actively seek and use oils that are certified organic, meaning that they have been produced according to USDA organic regulations. Our products are scented using high-quality or pure essential oils that offer naturally distilled or expressed fragrances from plants. Because these pure essential oils have their beneficial properties, some can be considered as being or having a holistic application. We, unfortunately, wouldn't be able to confirm those claims.

The Crunchy PSEUDO Hippie said What?

We are mindful that some people don't think they are being affected by what they use. We also feel we shouldn't pass our values on to you. Therefore, there are some of our Beard Oils, Balms, and Waxes that do contain fragrance oils. Unlike essential oils, these fragrances are chemically created, think Blueberry Cheesecake Candles. We aren’t completely anti-chemical due to the world we reside. Nevertheless, we do try to limit our exposure as much as possible, when we can. So purchase with your conscience if you so choose.

Our Values and Goals

We are Handmade from Beginning to End.

Everything you see from Thirteen Thieves has that handmade feeling. We designed our labels to reflect some of our goals. We use recycled grocery bags or kraft paper to be grounded and remind us to be conscious of the earth. We created all the blends from the oils we use for the scent to the composition of the base oils. We mix up and pour every product we have assuring that our quality standards are met. We cut, glue, and apply every label to every single bottle, tin, tube, or jar we sell. Before any order leaves us, we individually package your order and include a personalized note. We believe you should know how grateful we are and ultimately we want to spread some positive energy to you and your circles. Our commitment to handmade is in everything we do and reflects in every product you purchase.
